Bloom Drop is an innovative floristry service providing affordable and fresh, same-day deliveries to Cairns, Port Douglas and Atherton Tablelands. By offering a posy-of-the-day, the business avoids over-stocking varietals that don’t sell and maintains competitive prices.
The blooming business emerged from the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS), which is delivered in the Cairns region by Training Connections Australia (TCA) and fully funded by the Australian Government.
Bloom Drop owner, Sally Smith, said specific small business training and mentoring had been necessary in addition to her business degree.
“I had a 10-year corporate career in human resources and a degree in business, but the tailored training and mentoring gave me the confidence to successfully run Bloom Drop,” she said.
“I was sceptical that NEIS could help me, but the practical start-up steps and access to a network of other small businesses was invaluable.”
Bloom Drop offers a new ‘Little Posy’ flower arrangement four times a week to a growing number of followers who either subscribe to regular deliveries or make individual purchases. Customers can receive their flowers within a day for as little as $35.95 by visiting bloomdrop.com.au.
Sally added that she hoped to soon grow the business to a point where she could employ some staff.
“Within six weeks of launching the business we turned a modest profit. I’m hopeful we can continue that trajectory and grow to a point that sustains employment for myself and my husband and possibly some other staff,” she said.
TCA National Training Manager, Amanda Sophios, said that NEIS could be tailored to each participants’ level of knowledge and experience.
“More than 85 small businesses in the Cairns region have been established with the help of NEIS over the past 12 months. Each participant is unique and may have rarely worked or could hold a degree and significant professional experience,” she said.
“The tailored training and mentoring we offer comes at no cost to eligible individuals who can dedicate full-time to their business. We work with people from diverse backgrounds to bring their business idea to life.”
Training Connections Australia is running free NEIS information sessions every Thursday, 11 am – 12 pm at 11a-15 Sheridan Street, Cairns City.
