The Torres Strait Maritime Pathways Project (TSMPP) aims to develop the skills and capability of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people to operate commercial vessels. This training is creating careers in maritime related industries such as fishing, tourism, coastal trading and shipping.
Since 2016, 338 Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people have undertaken TSMPP courses. On successful completion of courses, students can transition into maritime related employment.
Maritime courses available through the TSMPP include:
- Coxswain Certificates
- Wild Harvest Dive course
- Marine Engine Driver
- Marine Radio
- Elements of Shipboard Safety
- First Aid
- Master 24m
- Certificate III Fishing Operations
Training Connections Australia (TCA) manages program enrolments and provides ongoing oversight and coordination of the courses. The Project is fully funded by the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) and accredited training is provided by the Australian Maritime College and Great Barrier Reef International Marine College.
